The Summer Power Bill Spike: Finding the Culprit

Cooling is well over half of a desert home’s summer bill, so when the bill goes wrong, the AC is suspect number one. Here is the lineup.

A shocking summer bill lands and the questions start. Was it the rate plan? The kids home all day? Something broken? In an Arizona home, cooling dominates summer usage so completely that the answer usually lives somewhere in the HVAC system. Here are the suspects, ranked by how often they turn out guilty.

The Usual Suspects

  • A loaded air filter. The blower strains against it for months, using more power to move less air. Free fix; see the desert filter schedule.
  • A dust coated outdoor coil. After a haboob or two, the coil sheds heat poorly and every cooling hour costs more. A gentle rinse restores it; our monsoon prep guide covers the routine.
  • Duct leaks that got worse. Attic heat kills duct sealing gradually, then suddenly. If some rooms lag and dust appears fast, read the warning signs.
  • A refrigerant leak. The system still cools, just slowly and expensively, running far longer per degree. Paired with ice or hissing, it is nearly certain; see leak repair.
  • An aging system in decline. Efficiency erodes every year a system runs past its prime, and the last summers of an old unit are always its most expensive. The SEER math shows what the erosion costs.

The Non HVAC Suspects Worth Ruling Out

  • A rate plan change or the seasonal rate window starting, worth one look at the bill’s fine print
  • A pool pump running longer than programmed
  • A garage fridge or freezer fighting the heat with dusty coils
  • A water heater with a failing element or heavy scale, covered in our hard water guide

The One Hour Diagnosis

A maintenance visit measures what guessing cannot: amp draws, refrigerant pressures, airflow, and coil condition, which together explain almost any bill spike. It is included twice a year in the Protection Plan. Book a tune up or call 480-406-7487 before next month’s bill repeats the shock.

“Mike texted before his arrival. Was neat, clean and professionally dressed for repairing our Maytag refrigerator which was not cooling at all. He troubleshot, removed and replaced the factory authorized part, and checked to ensure the repair worked. All completed in less than 45 minutes but not rushed.”
