A shocking summer bill lands and the questions start. Was it the rate plan? The kids home all day? Something broken? In an Arizona home, cooling dominates summer usage so completely that the answer usually lives somewhere in the HVAC system. Here are the suspects, ranked by how often they turn out guilty.
The Usual Suspects

- A dust coated outdoor coil. After a haboob or two, the coil sheds heat poorly and every cooling hour costs more. A gentle rinse restores it; our monsoon prep guide covers the routine.
- Duct leaks that got worse. Attic heat kills duct sealing gradually, then suddenly. If some rooms lag and dust appears fast, read the warning signs.

- A pool pump running longer than programmed
- A garage fridge or freezer fighting the heat with dusty coils
