Monsoon season is the hardest stretch of the year for East Valley cooling systems. The heat is already at maximum, then the storms add three new attacks: dust that chokes equipment, humidity that changes how systems behave, and power interruptions that stress electronics. Here is how to get ahead of each one.
The Dust Attack
- After every haboob, check your filter. One big storm can load a filter that had weeks of life left. Hold it to a light; if you cannot see through it, change it.
- Rinse the outdoor coil. Kill power at the disconnect, then gently hose the fins from outside. Dust on the coil acts like a blanket and can cut capacity noticeably. Our Maricopa climate guide covers why this matters so much here.
- Keep two spare filters on hand from June through September. The store run after a storm is a rite of passage you can skip.
The Humidity Attack
Most of the year your condensate drain barely works. During monsoon humidity it suddenly carries real water, and any scale or algae buildup clogs it. The float switch then shuts your AC down on a 108 degree evening, one of our most common storm season calls. Prevention costs a cup of white vinegar poured down the drain line at the start of the season and once a month through September.
The Power Attack
- After an outage, give the AC five minutes before expecting cool air. Modern systems have restart delays that protect the compressor.
- If the outdoor unit hums but will not start after a storm, shut it off and call. Power events are famous for finishing off weak capacitors.
- Consider a surge protector at the condenser. It is cheap insurance for a control board that costs hundreds.
