Pour a glass of Maricopa-area tap water and let it evaporate on the counter. That white crust left behind? Your dishwasher, washing machine, ice maker, and water heater process gallons of that every day — and the crust doesn’t evaporate away inside them. It builds, layer by layer, on heating elements, valves, and spray arms. It’s the single biggest reason water-using appliances die younger in Arizona.
How Hard Is Our Water, Really?
Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg). “Hard” officially starts at 7 gpg. Much of the Phoenix metro and Pinal County measures in the high teens to low twenties — roughly triple the threshold where plumbers start recommending softeners. This isn’t a water-quality safety issue; it’s dissolved calcium and magnesium from the rock our water travels through. Safe to drink, brutal on machines.
What Scale Does, Appliance by Appliance
- Dishwasher: scale clogs the spray-arm jets (cloudy glasses, gritty film), coats the heating element so cycles run longer and hotter, and stiffens the inlet valve. Typical Arizona dishwasher lifespan runs 1–3 years shorter than the national average.
- Washing machine: the inlet screens and valves scale up first (slow filling, error codes), then the internal heater on models that have one. Hard water also neutralizes detergent — you use more soap for worse results.
- Ice maker & fridge dispenser: the small water lines and valves are the first casualties in the whole house. Small, slow, cloudy ice is scale talking.
- Water heater: scale settles on the tank bottom and insulates the burner from the water. That popping/rumbling sound is water boiling through a rock layer — and it’s costing you efficiency every day.
- Your AC’s condensate drain: even your cooling system isn’t safe — mineral-rich condensate helps clog drain lines, tripping float switches during monsoon humidity. (More on that in our Maricopa climate guide.)
The Fight-Back Schedule
- Monthly: run the dishwasher empty with a citric-acid cleaner or a cup of white vinegar in the top rack. Same trick for the washer’s tub-clean cycle.
- Quarterly: replace the fridge water filter on schedule (it protects taste, not the valves — but a clogged filter strains the whole line). Wipe scale off the dishwasher door seal.
- Twice a year: check the washer’s inlet screens; a toothbrush and vinegar restore them in ten minutes.
- Annually: drain and flush the water heater. If it’s never been flushed and it’s 8+ years old, ask us before doing it yourself — sometimes the scale is what’s holding an old tank together.
- Consider a softener if you’re replacing appliances anyway: at our hardness levels it meaningfully extends the life of everything downstream.
