A warm refrigerator is the appliance emergency we treat most urgently — you’ve got hundreds of dollars of food on the clock. But before you book a service call, run through this list. About one in five “broken fridge” calls we get turns out to be something the homeowner could have fixed for free.
The 7 Checks
- 1. Check the temperature settings. Kids, cleaning, and grocery bags bump dials more often than you’d think. Fridge: 37°F. Freezer: 0°F.
- 2. Make sure the vents inside aren’t blocked. Cold air flows from the freezer to the fridge through vents. A tub of ice cream or a pizza box against the vent can warm the whole fresh-food side.
- 3. Test the door seal. Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the gasket is leaking cold air — wipe it clean and test again; a torn gasket is a cheap repair.
- 4. Vacuum the condenser coils. Dusty coils (underneath or behind the unit) make the compressor overheat and cooling fade. This is the #1 preventable cause we see.
- 5. Listen for the compressor and fans. Dead silence, constant clicking, or a loud buzz all point to different failures — note what you hear; it helps us diagnose faster.
- 6. Look for ice on the freezer’s back wall. A sheet of ice there usually means a failed defrost heater — the fridge will slowly warm as airflow chokes off. That’s a repair call.
- 7. Give it space and shade. A fridge crammed against the wall in a 100° Arizona garage is fighting physics. It needs an inch or two of clearance to shed heat.
When It’s Time to Call
- Ice on the back wall, no defrost cycle — likely defrost heater (typically $200–$350 to repair)
- Compressor clicking on and off — often a start relay (one of the cheaper fixes)
- Compressor runs, no cold at all — possible sealed-system issue; on an older fridge, ask us whether it’s worth it (repair-or-replace guide)
One of our recent customers put it best after we replaced a defrost heater: “Saved me from having to buy a new refrigerator.” That’s the goal — the repair that makes sense, at an upfront price.
