It’s the most common summer call we get: the system is running, air is moving, but it’s not cold. Before you assume the worst, work through this list in order — it’s the same sequence our techs follow, and about a quarter of these calls end up being something the homeowner could have fixed in five minutes.
Step 1: The Free Checks (5 Minutes)
- Thermostat mode. Confirm it’s on COOL, not FAN. On FAN, the blower circulates air without cooling it — which feels exactly like “AC blowing warm air.” Also check the batteries.
- Setpoint reality check. On a 115° day, a system in good health can typically hold your house 20–25 degrees below outdoor temperature. If it’s set to 72 and holding 78, that may be physics, not failure.
- The air filter. A fully loaded filter chokes airflow until the coil ices over — and an iced coil blows warm air. Pull the filter; if you can’t see light through it, that may be your whole problem.
- The breaker panel. Central AC uses two circuits: one for the indoor blower, one for the outdoor condenser. If the condenser breaker tripped, the blower keeps pushing uncooled air. Reset a tripped breaker once — if it trips again, stop and call; something electrical is wrong.
- The outdoor unit itself. Is the fan on top spinning? Is the unit humming but the fan still? A stuck fan with a humming compressor usually means a failed capacitor — the most common repair in Arizona (typically $150–$400).
Step 2: The Ice Check
Look at the copper lines at the outdoor unit and, if you can access it, the indoor coil. Ice anywhere means shut the cooling off and run the fan only. An iced system can’t cool, and running it risks the compressor — the most expensive part in the machine. Ice has two usual causes:
- Starved airflow — dirty filter, blocked returns, or a failing blower. Fix the airflow, let it thaw 2–4 hours, try again.
- Low refrigerant — which means a leak. Thawing helps for a day or two, then the ice returns. That needs professional leak detection, not a top-off.
Step 3: Know the Signature Sounds
- Click-hum-click every few minutes: compressor trying and failing to start — classic capacitor or start-relay failure.
- Outdoor fan runs, air never cools: possible refrigerant loss or compressor issue.
- Everything sounds normal, weak warm airflow: iced coil or duct problem — in Maricopa-area attics, ducts leaking into 150° attic space can dump your cold air before it reaches the rooms.

- Condenser fan motor: $300–$700
